Premise

The Coastal Shelter competition explores architecture within the ever-changing landscape of the Outer Banks, North Carolina. This fragile chain of barrier islands is shaped by wind, tides, and shifting sands, demanding a sensitive and adaptive design approach. Participants are invited to reinterpret the idea of a coastal sanctuary—one that balances exposure and protection while fostering a deep connection with the surrounding environment. The shelter should embody both resilience and poetry, offering a place for pause, reflection, and immersion in nature’s raw forces.

Objective

The goal is to design a compact, temporary-use coastal shelter that accommodates individuals or small groups. The structure must go beyond basic function, acting as an experiential device that frames views, controls light, and enhances sensory engagement. Designs should respond directly to environmental challenges such as strong winds, salt corrosion, and unstable terrain. Innovation in passive design, structural systems, and material usage is essential. The final proposal should evoke a sense of calm while acknowledging the intensity of the coastal setting.

Site

The site is a hypothetical location along the Outer Banks coastline. Participants may choose between ocean-facing dunes or calmer sound-side environments. Site selection should be supported with analysis, including:

  • Wind direction and intensity
  • Solar orientation
  • Tidal influence
  • Ecological sensitivity

The structure must maintain a minimal footprint, not exceeding 25 sqm (approx. 270 sq. ft.), and should integrate seamlessly with the natural terrain without disturbing the fragile dune ecosystem.

Constraints

Designs must address key environmental and structural challenges:

  • Elevated structure to withstand storm surge and flooding
  • Resistance to hurricane-force winds with clear load strategies
  • Use of corrosion-resistant, durable materials
  • Minimal site disruption and no heavy grading
  • Fully passive design (no mechanical systems)

The shelter should demonstrate a light-touch approach, preserving vegetation and natural landforms while ensuring long-term resilience.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be judged on a balance of creativity, performance, and feasibility:

  • Strength and originality of the architectural concept
  • Responsiveness to coastal conditions
  • Structural resilience and material durability
  • Quality of spatial and sensory experience
  • Integration with the natural environment
  • Clarity and presentation of the proposal

Special emphasis will be placed on how effectively the design transforms environmental challenges into architectural opportunities.

Budget

Participants must design within a $75,000 USD construction budget. This includes materials, labor, and basic installation.

Cost Factor Consideration
Materials Durable, coastal-resistant, cost-efficient
Construction Simple methods, potential prefabrication
Transport Remote coastal logistics
Maintenance Low upkeep, long lifespan

Efficient and practical solutions are encouraged. A brief cost breakdown is recommended to validate feasibility.
