Compact Live-Work House (Portland, USA)

Premise

As remote work, freelancing, and home-based businesses become increasingly common, the boundaries between residential and professional spaces continue to evolve. The Compact Live-Work House competition explores how architecture can support this shift through thoughtful spatial design, flexibility, and efficiency.

Set within Portland, Oregon—a city known for its creative culture, sustainability initiatives, and human-scaled neighborhoods—participants are invited to envision a compact dwelling that fosters productivity, comfort, and wellbeing. The project should demonstrate how limited space can accommodate multiple functions without compromising quality of life.

Objective

The goal is to design a compact house that supports both residential and work-related activities within a small footprint. The proposal should carefully balance privacy, concentration, relaxation, and social interaction while maximizing usability and spatial efficiency.

Participants are encouraged to explore adaptable layouts, multifunctional furniture, passive environmental strategies, and innovative approaches to compact living. The house should provide a healthy and inspiring environment where occupants can comfortably live and work throughout the day.

Site

The site is a hypothetical urban or suburban lot located within Portland, Oregon. Participants may select a suitable context that supports their design concept.

Site analysis should consider:

• Climate and seasonal variations
• Solar orientation
• Neighborhood character
• Access and circulation
• Sustainability opportunities

The proposal should demonstrate how the building integrates with its surroundings while maintaining a compact and efficient footprint.

Constraints

Designs must address the following requirements:

• Integrated living and workspace functions

• Emphasis on natural light and ventilation
• Sustainable and environmentally responsible design

Participants must design within a $150,000 USD construction budget. This includes materials, labor, and basic installation.

Efficient and realistic solutions are encouraged. A brief cost breakdown is recommended to demonstrate feasibility.
